For those unfamiliar with the Bargue plates, they are part of a 19th-century French art curriculum developed by Charles Bargue and Jean-Léon Gérôme. It stands as one of the earliest drawing courses ever created, designed to help students—ranging from secondary school level upwards—improve their drawing skills and visual literacy. As an admirer of 19th-century art and everything associated with it, I decided to tackle one of these plates by following an in-depth YouTube tutorial. The instructor used Plate 23—one of my personal favorites from the Bargue collection—so I embarked on a long, meticulous journey of measuring, sketching, and erasing to achieve the highest possible accuracy. If I were to describe the experience, I would say it was an incredibly slow yet enjoyable process, especially given the highly satisfying final results—as you can see here.
