Story behind the piece
Artwork Description
An exploration of human duality, time, and our relationship with the universe, this one-of-one mixed-media work exists somewhere between painting and sculpture.
A female figure rests almost nonchalantly upon a constructed planetary form, its silver exterior opening into a golden interior and an Earth-like core. Her loosely hanging hand holds a watch, introducing an ambiguous relationship with time: is she waiting for something to arrive, waiting for something to end, or simply refusing to let time dictate her existence?
Rooted in a personal spiritual understanding of universal energies, the work reflects the contradictions of being human, the angel and the sinner, the sacred and the earthly, the desire to control and the freedom of surrender. It considers our constant search for signs, meaning and certainty, while leaving room for the possibility that some things are meant to unfold beyond our understanding.
The work also draws from the artist’s personal relationship with music, celestial symbolism and the melancholic introspection of contemporary R&B, where themes of transformation, longing, self discovery and cosmic belonging intersect. Saturn becomes an unspoken symbol of distance, time, limitation and the desire to transcend the familiar.
Constructed through layers of structural elements, cement, plaster and oil paint, the piece transforms the canvas into a physical landscape. Developed over approximately two and a half years, its own prolonged creation echoes the central tension of the work: the desire to arrive somewhere, and the acceptance that becoming cannot always be rushed.
Ultimately, the figure remains suspended between waiting and indifference, vulnerability and transcendence … existing within a universe she may be trying to understand, or may have already learned to let go of.
About the title: A philosophical, slightly provocative title. It connects the watch, her apparent indifference, and the idea that time may not have the power over us that we imagine.
