This work explores the state of childhood as it is reduced to need and emotional deprivation. The child hugs her doll as a substitute for the absent embrace and the security she has never experienced. The interplay of colors and expressions, imbued with melancholy and contrast, reflects the innocence of appearance and the weight of loneliness—or perhaps a lack of the fundamental relationships a child needs for psychological development. This painting is a silent meditation on childhood deprived of its rights to love, affection, and a sense of security.
